UPDATE: 20 MAY 2024
I have remained engaged with the Hospital’s senior management on behalf of residents over the last year.
I am pleased that the new building is on course to open later this year, ready for winter. Last month a “topping out” ceremony was conducted marking the completion of the overall structure of the new building. I will provide you with further details about the opening when known.
The new Department will feature state-of-the-art equipment and technology, as well as increased capacity to handle a greater number of patients. Some of the new features include:
- A new resuscitation room with double the capacity of the current one, for patients needing treatment for critical conditions.
- Two further paediatric resuscitation bays for children and increased privacy for patients with treatment in single bay rooms.
- Faster access to radiology and diagnostic teams for scans and tests.
- A new ambulance drop-off zone for patients, to improve the flow of patients into the ED and reduce the time patients are waiting outside in ambulances.
- Dedicated rest areas for staff.
I helped to launch construction of the new Emergency Department in March 2023 alongside QA’s Chief Executive, and I have maintained contact throughout the project and will continue to do so.
A virtual video tour of the new facility is above where you can see how the design will improve care for patients.
UPDATE: FRIDAY 20 JANUARY 2023
Local MP Alan Mak has joined Queen Alexandra Hospital’s Chief Executive Penny Emerit to launch construction of the hospital's new £58million Emergency Department, funded by central Government.
The new Emergency Department, which Mr Mak has worked alongside MP colleagues to secure funding for, will be built on the site of the former east car park. It is a major new addition to the Hospital, which serves residents from all parts of the Havant Constituency and the wider south Hampshire. The Department will feature state-of-the-art equipment and technology, as well as increased capacity to handle a greater number of patients.
Local MP Alan Mak said "Having successfully campaigned in Westminster to secure £58million of Government funding for QA’s new Emergency Department, I’m delighted to help launch construction. The new facility will boost capacity and reduce the time patients spend in ED with more treatment rooms and a specially designed entrance to enable a faster turnaround of ambulances, getting them back on the road more quickly. As a result patients from the Havant Constituency and the surrounding area will receive safer and more timely care.”
Penny Emerit, the CEO of the Portsmouth Hospitals Trust, said, “This is another major milestone in our work to improve emergency care for our community. This new facility provides a great opportunity to redesign our urgent and emergency services to further respond to the needs of our patients from across the Hampshire and South East region, including Havant. We want to ensure that we provide the best possible services for everyone we care for.”
Construction of the new emergency department is expected to take approximately 22 months and is set to be completed by winter 2024.
Queen Alexandra Hospital serves the entire Havant Constituency and is committed to providing exceptional care to the community. Alan Mak MP maintains regular contact with the Hospital’s management team.
Some of the new features of the Emergency Department include:
- Doubling the current resus capacity from four adult bays to eight for patients needing treatment for critical conditions
- Two further paediatric resus bays for children and increased privacy for patients with treatment in single bay rooms.
- Faster access to radiology teams for scans and tests
- A designated ED drop off zone with disabled car parking
- An accredited Changing Places accessible facility
- Dedicated rest areas for staff.
A virtual tour of the facility is available via a fly through video to see how the design will help staff to work in a more streamlined way, continue to improve patient safety and provide the best possible care.
UPDATE: 1 DECEMBER 2021
Local MP Alan Mak has visited Queen Alexandra Hospital to welcome their new Emergency Care Centre which will provide extra capacity for patients this winter. Mr Mak also visited the site of a new building under construction which will increase bed capacity and is expected to open in December 2021.
Both new facilities will increase the Hospital’s emergency care capacity, meaning more patients can be admitted to hospital from ambulances quickly, and then receive high quality care.
Penny Emerit, the Chief Executive of Portsmouth Hospital Universities NHS Trust, showed Mr Mak the Emergency Care Centre, which will be holding patients whose situation is deemed urgent, but not critical. This reduces the demand for emergency care beds and frees capacity for those with critical needs.
Local MP Alan Mak said: “The new Emergency Care Centre is a positive new innovation which will ensure more patients are treated more quickly this winter when pressure on QA Hospital always rises. I was also pleased to see a new ward building being constructed which will add more patient beds increasing capacity at QA Hospital. I’ve campaigned for more NHS funding in Westminster, and I welcome these new facilities at our local hospital. Thanks to everyone at QA Hospital who work hard all year round, especially during winter time.”
Penny Emerit, Chief Executive of Portsmouth Hospital Universities NHS Trust, said: “Thank you to Alan Mak MP for visiting us again. It was great to have the opportunity to look around the new Emergency Care Centre, along with our new outpatient pharmacy and ward building, which will all provide additional capacity and are key to the delivery of our winter plan. It is important that everyone receives the right care in the right place to ensure that patients are as safe as they can be.”
