Local MP Alan Mak welcomed Charlie Young to Parliament. Charlie, aged 7 from Fairfield Infant School, has become Havant’s first Child MP, and he attended the first ever meeting of the Children’s Parliament Select Committee in Westminster.
Ten lucky primary school students from across the country were invited to a special sitting in Parliament to grill water company bosses and businesses on sustainability and management. Charlie Young was invited to attend to represent the Havant area.
The Children’s Parliament Select Committee is intended be the first in a regular series of session which will focus on issues impacting the future of young people, from the environment to modern technology.
The first Children’s Parliament in 2021 was held on the eve of COP26 and debated environmental issues. The second was held earlier this year in May, with the main topic up for discussion being “How Do We Make The World A Safer Place?” with reference to the online safety of young people.
Charlie was given a tour of Parliament before taking his seat at the Select Committee, chaired by Anna Firth MP.
Crystal Griffin, Charlie’s mum and a local business owner in Havant said: “The Children’s Select Committee was a great way for Charlie to learn more about politics and accountability. Thanks to Alan for dropping by and offering his support and encouragement”.
